Gary Sanchez is penciled in as the Yankees' opening day starter at the catcher position for the 2020 MLB season, but who earns the back-up role has yet to be determined. Kyle Higashioka appears to be the likely option, but the team has also signed Chris Ianetta and Erik Kratz to minor-league contracts in the off-season. New York increased competition for the role on January 28 by signing Josh Thole to a minor-league deal. The former Toronto Blue Jays catcher will earn $600,000 if he plays in the majors.
Originally selected by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft, Thole has played in 478 career regular-season games with the Mets and Blue Jays and has a .242 batting average in addition to nine home runs and 111 RBI. His most productive year was in 2011 and he hasn't played in the majors since 2016.
Higashioka, meanwhile, is out of minor-league options and thus must clear waivers before being sent to the minors. While he has struggled in limited playing time in the majors, he had a .278 batting average and 20 home runs with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.
